Health Anxiety & Somatic OCD

When Concerns About Your Health Become Difficult to Set Aside

Health-related anxiety can appear in several conditions, including illness anxiety and OCD. Paying attention to your health is important; the challenge arises when concern becomes persistent and repeated checking or reassurance begins taking up significant amounts of time. Because similar symptoms can have different causes, careful assessment matters.

The Health-Anxiety Cycle

A physical sensation or health-related thought may lead to increased attention and uncertainty.

You may then feel an urge to check your body, search symptoms online, ask someone for reassurance, review previous medical results, or repeatedly monitor how you feel.

Other people respond by avoiding health information or medical appointments because the anxiety feels overwhelming. Either pattern can become disruptive.

Importantly, treating health anxiety does not mean assuming that physical symptoms are psychological or ignoring appropriate medical care. New, significant, or changing medical symptoms should be evaluated appropriately by a medical professional.

Patterns That Can Keep the Cycle Going

These are patterns, not proof of a diagnosis. They can appear in OCD and also in other conditions, and not everyone experiences all of them. Assessment can help clarify what is happening for you.

  • Checking the body for changes, lumps, sensations, or symptoms.
  • Searching online for information about symptoms or conditions.
  • Seeking reassurance from family, friends, or medical providers.
  • Requesting repeated tests or appointments to rule things out.
  • Avoiding medical information, appointments, or reminders of illness altogether.

Somatic or Sensorimotor Obsessions

Some OCD presentations focus less on illness and more on awareness of ordinary bodily processes.

A person may become unusually focused on breathing, blinking, swallowing, heartbeat, or another bodily sensation and begin worrying that they will never stop noticing it.

The effort to stop noticing often has the opposite effect: attention becomes even more focused on the sensation.

Finding a More Balanced Response

Treatment begins by distinguishing appropriate health care from anxiety-driven checking and reassurance.

When OCD mechanisms are present, ERP may involve gradually decreasing repetitive checking, reducing reassurance-seeking, allowing physical sensations to come and go without constant monitoring, and becoming more comfortable with the normal uncertainty that accompanies health.

The goal is not to ignore your health. It is to develop a more proportionate relationship with health concerns so they no longer require continuous attention.

If you are unsure whether your experience is primarily health anxiety, OCD, another anxiety condition, or a combination, assessment can help clarify the next step. There is no obligation to begin treatment.

What Treatment With Me Looks Like

Treatment begins with careful assessment of your individual OCD cycle, including triggers, obsessions, behavioral and mental compulsions, avoidance, reassurance seeking, and feared outcomes. From there, we collaboratively develop an individualized ERP plan based on your symptoms and treatment goals.

Common questions

Is health anxiety the same as OCD?

Health-related anxiety can appear in several conditions, including illness anxiety and OCD. Because similar symptoms can have different causes, careful assessment matters.

What if I actually have a medical condition?

Treatment does not assume that physical symptoms are psychological. New, significant, or changing medical symptoms should be evaluated appropriately by a medical professional.

Why does reassurance stop working?

Reassurance may bring temporary relief while leaving the underlying uncertainty unresolved, which can lead to further checking.

Will I be told to stop seeing doctors?

No. Treatment distinguishes appropriate health care from anxiety-driven checking and reassurance, and can be coordinated with your physician.

Can this be treated by telehealth?

Yes. Sessions are provided through secure, HIPAA-compliant video.
